Little Boy

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Out of all of the newborn sessions that I've done, I've only had 1 boy session before this past week.  The day we found out, I booked a newborn session for a little boy. It felt like it was meant to be. Especially when we found out the family already had a few other kids and two of the girls were named Rose and Eleanor. (We had planned on naming our girl Eleanor Rose). And the dad was a diehard Steeler's fan! It was a great session and little Christopher was so cute with so much hair!

I hope my little boy is this cute!

How far along? 21 Weeks!

Total weight gain/loss: Down 6 lbs

Maternity clothes? The few I have are SO comfortable. Looking forward to getting some more!

Sleep: Ok so the past few weeks, when I sleep now, for some reason I don't move around. So if I fall asleep on my side, I wake up still there in the morning. It is making me SO sore! I don't know how to fix that. It hurts my hips so much!

Best moment this week: Finding out it's a boy! Can't wait to meet little Harrison/Hendrix. We're gonna wait to determine which name at birth, since they kind of go with different personalities.

Miss Anything? I kind of miss the not-knowing. It's so final now! Can't wait to go through this all again in a few years.

Movement: YES! All the time!

Food cravings: Bread. Jesse's going carb-free, so we just dont have any around the house now. All I want is warm buttery bread. Mmm.

Anything making you queasy or sick:  nope

Gender: BOY

Labor Signs: nope.

Symptoms: hip pain. I was seriously hurting after laying on the ultrasound table.

Wedding rings on or off? on

Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy!

Looking forward to: Getting to buy more little boy things!

It's a Boy!

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Well, we just got back from our ultrasound appointment. We decided to have the tech write down the gender for us so we could open it at home. At the appointment, I really just wanted to know, but I'm so glad we were able to open it in private.

During the appointment, I had to pee sooo bad! She let me go halfway through, which was a huge relief. She wanted to try and see if the baby would be in a better position after I relieved some pressure.  He had his legs firmly closed the whole time, but we were able to see him moving around and sucking. It was so fun to see what I'd been feeling for a week.  I thought I saw girl parts a few times, and I was getting so excited.  Then she was trying to look between the legs and I was pretty sure I saw boy parts and started to get a little sad, but I was still hopeful.

You can all judge me if you want, but I've been dreaming of a girl my whole pregnancy.  I really wanted all the pink and frills. It made me so mad whenever anyone told me they thought I had a boy.  Who were they to know?! I'm the mom! I was absolutely convinced I was having a little girl.

We got home and Jesse insisted on taping us opening it, and I'm glad he shut off the camera right at the end, because seconds after I burst into tears.  I sobbed "But I wanted a girl!". He apologized and said it was all his fault, haha.  And every single person he called to tell that we're having a boy said "Is Liz ok about it?" because they all knew how much I wanted a girl.

Right now, an hour after finding out, I'm still not ok. I know I will be, and I do know how silly it is to be upset about it.  But I just had such a vision of this little girl and I wanted it so badly.  How the heck am I going to deal with a penis!? My mom suggested going out and buying a bunch of boy stuff to make myself feel better. That's the plan for today, but I'm sure I'll still struggle with wanting to buy frilly pink dresses.

Jesse says maybe next time we'll have twin girls and I'm definitely ok with that! I want to get pregnant again ASAP, as crazy as that sounds!

Nursery Inspiration Board

Thursday, August 16, 2012

I decided to create an inspiration board for our nursery once we actually decided that we'd have one.  For awhile we thought we'd just have the crib in our bedroom, but I really wanted a nursery.  Since the winter is slower for photography, we will convert it to a nursery for the 3 short months we're in this apartment.

I think I would style it this way no matter what gender we're having, but if it's a girl, I might want to add some coral in there somewhere.  I like the greyish-greenish-blue wall color with some wainscoting (neither of which will make it into our very temporary place). I think it's pretty for either gender.  I love me some white and grey as well for a gender-neutral and clean space.  Throw in some pops of yellow and we're set!

We have settled on the IKEA crib, and we'll probably DIY everything else in the room.  I have a dresser that I will either refinish or will borrow my parent's old changing table dresser.  We'll hang some prints of baby animals and I will knit that floor pouf.  I want to sew a few pillows and possibly drapes, and I've already made the twine pendant light that's currently in use in my studio. I kind of want that small EXPEDIT from IKEA to turn on it's side (so it's low to the ground) and fill with books and maybe 2 baskets of toys.

Overall I want the space to light and airy, clean and cozy feeling.  I'm pretty excited to clear out my studio and start preparing for baby! We're trying to get the minimum amount of 'stuff' and eliminate things that aren't really necessary.  I think we'll all be happier that way.  I would rather spend our money on a few good quality items that will last us through a few kids.  I would love to get some wooden blocks and toys that are open-ended creatively and that will hold up to chewing and throwing.

I just started to feel the baby kicking and moving around the past 2 days.  Today he/she's been going nuts. Moving all day long. It's so weird to feel that but pretty awesome.  Everything is just starting to feel real and I'm so excited!

I will probably add more things to the inspiration board and hopefully can share a 'kind-of' after of the nursery.  We're looking into buying a house, so hopefully some of the more permanent ideas can come into play at that point.

Healthy Foods

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

So my cute husband decides half-way through my pregnancy that he wants to get more fit and healthy, riiight as I'm gonna start getting huge. Nice, huh? Anyways, he wanted to cut out most or all of his carbs in his meals, and juicing for other meals. So far it's been fairly easy with some creativity and internet searching.

I wanted to find some good meals for him that were still super yummy so he wouldn't feel too deprived and want to quit.  I found a blog called It is written by a woman who is a featherweight boxer and all of the recipes are very low or no carb, and look amazing.

We made the Slow Cooker Chicken Curry with Greens and put it over some Cauliflower rice.  I didn't end up cooking it in the slow cooker, because I hadn't decided to make it until an hour before he got home, but it was still super easy and very delicious.  Here is her recipe:

Serves 4-6

  • 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, preferably fire-roasted, drained
  • Half a 10 oz jar rogan josh paste such as Patak's, or other curry paste. Or 2-4 Tbs rogan josh spice (such as Penzeys orhomemade) or other curry powder.
  • 1 16 oz bag frozen chopped collard greens
  • 1 medium onion, chopped OR 1 cup frozen diced onion
  • Optional: 1/2 cup thick coconut milk such as Aroy-D coconut cream. I didn't add this so it's not a solid recommendation, but next time I will; I think it would have been really tasty.
  1. Stir together the diced tomatoes and curry paste or powder (and coconut milk, if using) until thoroughly combined. Stir in the onion. Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper and then thoroughly coat with the tomato mixture. Freeze if desired.
  2. When ready to cook, dump the chicken mixture into a slow cooker with the bag of collard greens. Cook 4-6 hours on low if un-frozen, 6-8 hours if frozen.
  3. Serve over cauli rice.
We served it over Cauliflower Rice, as per her recommendation, and were surprised at how good and easy it was to make.  You just chop up cauliflower into manageable pieces and food process it until it's the size of rice.  Then you microwave it in a bowl by itself for 5-6 minutes.  It doesn't need seasoning if you're using it as plain rice, but you could eat it by itself with some butter and salt and pepper. Or Garlic. MMmmm. It was actually delicious on it's own and we plan on using this for future recipes or just as a yummy snack.

She has some other great recipes without too many substitutions that sound amazing and we're planning on trying a bunch of them this week.  I think her blog is worth a look!

Next up: Loaded Baked Potato Soup - made with cauliflower instead of potato.

18 1/2 Weeks

Thursday, August 9, 2012

How far along? 18 1/2 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: down 5lbs

Maternity clothes? Stretchy yoga pants are pretty much all I wear, but I still dont feel like I look pregnant or anything.

Sleep: A bit restlessly, but not too bad. Crazy dreams every single night.

Best moment this week: Band of Skulls concert last night. They were amazing and my adorable husband got us up on the balcony to sit after I started to get hip pain from standing for 2 1/2 hours waiting for them to come on.

Miss Anything? Having an appetite and sweet things tasting normal instead of so sickly sweet that I never want them ever.

Movement: Not yet.

Food cravings: Nope. Since the beginning I've never been nauseous, but have had ZERO appetite and I get full very very fast. I never feel hungry either, so sometimes I forget to eat.  Eating out at restaurants isn't fun anymore since by the time I get my food, I feel stuffed from the water and dont want to eat.

Anything making you queasy or sick:  I haven't been nauseous but have randomly thrown up 3 times so far. All three times I was just not feeling well, I felt feverish and couldn't place where the feeling was coming from. And then out of the blue I had to run to the bathroom to puke.  And all three times I didn't have anything in my stomach and those dry-heaves are TERRIBLE and so painful.

Gender: Find out in a week and a half!

Labor Signs: nope.

Symptoms: no appetite, getting annoyed and not wanting to be touched when hot.

Belly Button in or out? in

Wedding rings on or off? on

Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy, and excited. I just want to speed up time!

Looking forward to: Finding out the gender. I'm starting to be maybe OK with a boy, but I still really want a girl.  Most of my dreams involve me holding a baby girl, usually trying to protect her.  The things making me ok with having a boy are some of the surprisingly cute clothing I've seen in stores.

PS- All that blood work drama was helpful because my family is now aware that they should be tested, and they know the risks. And thankfully I don't have to inject myself with blood thinners during the pregnancy, but I will once I have the baby for the first 6 weeks. Hopefully everything else will be smooth from here on out. Oh and I am determined to have this dang baby in 2012.  Would be great to have a little one to show everyone at christmas. I know it's not likely, but one can hope!
